High standards at English Ski and Snowboard Cross Championships

Chill Factore in Manchester witnessed some nail biting racing as the rising stars of ski and snowboard cross took to the slopes at last weekend’s English Ski and Snowboard Cross Championships.

Standards were high as over 65 athletes battled it out on the expertly built course, which challenged riders right out of the start gate.

In the Ski Cross competition, the winners were two members of the England Ski Cross Squad, Laurence Willows for the men and taking her third title in consecutive years, Emma Peters for the women.

For the snowboarders, Kyle Wise took the title, again the third time in a row he has been crowned champion. And for the women, Gillian Finnerty took top spot.

With riders of all ages and abilities competing, from riders taking part in their first ever race, to international competitors, there was a great mixture of standards. With plenty time to train on the course prior to the competition starting, younger athletes could spend time learning from the experienced riders.

The innovative course was built by Simon Nicholson from Cross Snowsports, a new ski and snowboard cross club based at Chill Factore.. The first feature was a Wu-Tang, which may have been the most challenging, feature ever seen on an indoor cross track.

With the technical features at the top of the course and a open bottom half there was lots of overtaking which made it fun for riders and spectators alike.

Snowsport England Talent Development Officer Ian Findlay said: “A great team of volunteers have pulled off another fantastic English Ski & Snowboard Cross Championships. The standard of riding on show was excellent and the event proved that with smart course design, we really can train up athletes in the cross disciplines using the excellent facilities we have right here in England”.
