What a fine start to the winter season, the first Bass race had been eagerly anticipated by all to get rid of the excesses of Christmas, but unfortunately as parents (or was it just the dad’s) watched the webcams wishing for snow, none arrived. On Christmas Day at teatime, the word was out, the first race of the season; the BARSCS in Petzen had been cancelled due to the lack of snow!! Organisers had waited until the last minute but the snow just did not come.

Some chose to stay at home others drove off in the hope of finding some snow somewhere and last minute accommodation.

Only a week later, parents and skiers alike arrived at Les Houches for the Anglo Scottish Champs only to find that races were being cancelled due to too much snow!  The GS was cancelled at the very last minute as it was decided that conditions were too dangerous for the children to ski. The minis did manage to race over at La Cha with Will Feneley (NOR) scoring a 3rd in the Bairns 2 category.

The GS did take place the following day. Conditions were better but unfortunately there were no podium places for Ersa racers. The day after conditions had improved and the slalom was able to proceed. Yasmin Cooper (Hem) put in a storming performance to come 2nd overall in the combined and first in CH1 closely followed by Sophie Rolph ( HEM)  in 3rd CH2 and Jess Anderson (SMK) 2nd CH1 .  In the boys Barney Lewis (SMK) came 4th overall and 4th (CH2), the only other boy from the region to finish in the top 10 was Joshua Serdet (SMK) 7th overall and 7th CH2.

There was a good turnout from the ERSA region racers for the Welsh Champs at Champery, with 5 girls Nia Jenkins, Flo Bell, Megan Jenkins, Yasmin and Jess all finishing in the top 10 in the slalom and Barney and Richard Goldsworthy from SMK, in the boys.  In the GS the girls fared well again, Megan achieving a 3rd position on the podium, closely followed by Flo Bell and Nia J.  Nia J was declared overall Welsh Champion receiving a rather large cowbell as her prize! Will Fenley was on the podium again in 2nd place in the Minis.

A small number of the region’s racers ventured to the School boys (Patrick Mercer) and School Girls races (Natasha Wright, Issy Yeung and Flo Bell) in Meringen and Flaine, but the English Championships at Bormio attracted a larger number of ERSA racers; the girl’s races were dominated by Rebecca Brown. The weather was changeable, some days sunny, others a complete white out.  The Children boys’ slalom saw podium positions for Barney (2nd CH2) and a 1st CH1 for Robert Poth (HEM), with Harry Sutherland (HEM) achieving 2nd place CH1. Robert dominated the GS too achieving 1st place CH1 again, the only ERSA racer to achieve a top ten position. While Flo 5th CH2 and Megan 2nd CH1 achieved top ten places in the girl’s GS. Megan also achieved a 2nd place in CH1 in the Super G in appalling conditions and Robert took a clean sweep with an outstanding 1st in CH1. This was a magnificent achievement for Robert claiming all 3 top podium positions, quite challenge to achieve again next year! James Grant (HEM) and Marek Behnke (SMK) did well in the NJC races to reduce their points.

The season drew to an end in the shadow of the news of Snowsport GB going into administration, and a period of uncertainty as to whether the British Land Championships at Meribel would still take place.  After much negotiation it was announced that indeed they would take place allowing people to make plans to venture to the 3 Valleys to include the Scottish Champs at Courchevel. In the Children’s ladies slalom and GS, the same three names appeared again around the top 10. In the boys slalom Robert and Joshua finished in the top 10, Robert maintaining his top 10 position in the GS too.

Finally, over the hill into the next valley, for the much awaited Brits…

Changing weather conditions played havoc with the programme which remained quite fluid (no pun intended for those who regularly visit the Brits!). Cancellations, abandoned, rescheduled were all words of the day meaning that some skiers never got to race!  But this is Meribel where there can be literally four seasons in one day. Robert Poth repeated his amazing performance of Bormio achieving number one spot on the podium for Super G, Slalom and GS, while Megan J achieved a 2nd in CH1 in Super G and 3rd in GS. Jess A and Yasmin C gained a 2nd and 3rd CH1 in the Slalom.  In the minis competition in Mottaret Megan Riley (SMK) achieved a 3rd and Will Feneley (NOR) a 4th in the first of the two races.

So that was the winter season in a nutshell. Congratulations to all the racers from the region that ventured far and wide to race on snow, to those who were rewarded and also those that successfully completed the courses!
